Tram/light rail system

Southampton a lot of the times is gridlocked and most if jot all inner city journeys are done via car or bus but we have an abandoned railway corridor. Trams and street running light rail are the cheapest form of mass transit and it has benefited cities like sheffield and Nottingham. where possible is should jot run in mixed traffic but alongside the road or in a bus land. A system would need to connect suburbs and when it does reach the city centre it should have good connectivity with locations and points of interest. Is there is sufficient budget in the council this needs to be looked into to make sure southampton stays an important city.

Tramlover7 I'd love trams - I know that the Southampton MRT feasibility studies are reporting to the council in June. From the latest BSIPs, it looks like we're heading for a BRT system rather than trams, unfortunately. Let's hope they come back and say trams are feasible!

Trams would be good for the city and a properly integrated LRT or tram system would encourage people to get out of their cars. It would need good suburb connections tho

Absolutely agreed with you both -

Francis Yeah - agreed. The one benefit of a BRT lite system - if done properly - is that it could prove demand for an upgrade to trams.
Not sure if I trust Southampton to go about it correctly at all, though. Every colour of council has been weak on proper transit. Too many NIMBYs in the city!

We should have trams
I was in Bordeaux last month and their tram system was great, shoots in from the airport and the city centre section doesn't have wires either!

Alstom Citadis with their APS tech is definitely the sort of thing I'd be looking at for a future tram system
